Tufts . . . A ‘hidden’ star of great American colleges!
Tufts has such an unusual position among America’s top colleges that uraccepted has even created a term for it, the “Tufts syndrome”! Without question, Tufts is a terrific college . . . one of the best in the country. So, why isn’t it well known outside of New England? Why isn’t it on the college list of every high school senior? The answer is a quirk of geography. The Tufts campus almost touches the campuses of two other educational superstars, Harvard and MIT. A student can literally walk from Tufts to either Harvard or MIT.
Anyone who has ever had an older sibling who was an “all state” athlete or scored perfect 800’s across the board on their SAT’s understands the problem. You might be an “all county” star but if your older sibling was “all state” then it feels like a let down. It isn’t but it feels that way. If you scored 790’s on your SAT’s, your family should be bragging about you to everyone in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, if your older brother or sister had perfect 800’s, they’ll probably say you did well, not as good as your older sibling, but pretty good nonetheless. Move Harvard and MIT to Iowa and Tufts would be considered a Boston superstar!
That said, there are some very special aspects of Tufts which every talented high school senior should seriously consider. Boston is a wonderful place to spend your college years. There are more colleges and college students in Boston than in any other place in the country. Tufts has a pleasant suburban campus with quick and easy public transportation to Harvard Square and downtown Boston.
Finally, don’t worry about those “freshman 15 lbs” or staying in shape . . . Tufts has a “hillside” campus which will ensure that you get enough exercise!
