Penn State . . . From simple rural origins a great university emerges!
The famous University Park campus of Penn State was deliberately chosen because it is basically located in the middle of the state. The idea was that the campus location shouldn’t favor any particular part of Pennsylvania more than another. Of course the location does happen to favor residents who live in the middle of the state!
Even the most basic student of economics understands that high quality tends to increase the cost of any good or service. Not so with an education at Penn State. The old axiom, “if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is” simply doesn’t apply to Penn State. The tuition at Penn State is an extraordinary bargain . . . even for out of state students.
Look back at the history of many of America’s other great colleges and you’ll find that their goal was to educate young men in the arts, literature, and the sciences. Not so Penn State. When it was founded in 1855, the initial goal of the university was to apply new scientific principles to . . . farming! In fact, the university’s original name was the “Farmer’s High School of Pennsylvania”.
And speaking of names, it was Milton Eisenhower, brother of President Dwight Eisenhower who changed the name of the school to The Pennsylvania State University.
There is no athletic program anywhere which surpasses Penn State. The Nittany Lions football team and its legendary coach Joe Paterno are the center of media attention. But, Penn State has built an athletic program across the entire sports landscape which is among the very best in the nation.
