Myth #6
“Junior year is a good time to start working on college stuff.”
Why is this one a myth? Heck, most of the parents in this room never began to think about college until Junior year much less begin seriously preparing for the admissions process. Well, those days are gone. In today’s world, the only time Junior year is a good time to begin a serious approach to college admissions is if you were in a coma for your Freshman and Sophomore years.
Just like the NFL season has gotten progressively longer over the years . . . so has the college admissions process. In order to put your best foot forward, preserve the most college options and secure the very best financial aid package . . . a student should begin paying real attention to the college admissions process when they begin high school. The race now starts at the beginning of Freshman year not the Spring of Junior year.
When a student walks into their first class as a Freshman . . . that should be the beginning of a serious effort to prepare for college. Filling out applications in the Fall of Senior year doesn’t begin the admissions process . . . it concludes the process. Think of this process as a marathon. It’s not a sprint and it’s not a 100 mile iron man test. It’s a marathon. It’s tough but with focus and training you can do it. The process lasts just over 3 years which is enough time for you to do all the “training” necessary.
