Myth #22
“I’m nervous about sending my kid away to school because college campuses today are very dangerous. The tragic incidents at Virginia Tech and Delaware State prove it.”
This belief is a myth but unfortunately there is an element of truth to it. Even though we’d like to pretend that it isn’t so, the truth is that the period of life from 18 through 22 is a little dangerous no matter who you are and where you are! Statistically speaking, deaths from car wrecks, other sorts of accidents, alcohol poisoning, substance abuse, and yes, crime are all uncomfortably elevated. The more important question is whether a college campus is any more dangerous than other places that you’re likely to find young men and women this age. That answer, thank goodness, is unquestionably . . . no! In fact, a college campus may be one of the safest places to spend those 4 years.
