MIT . . . Forget the pocket protectors, this isn’t your father’s MIT!
MIT is a remarkable school . . . that much everybody knows. But what’s even more remarkable is just how much most people don’t know about MIT. Some of what you don’t know about this famous Cambridge institution will almost certainly surprise you! Forget your image of a 98 pound grade grubbing nerd with a pencil protector and consider the following.
For instance, did you know that MIT offers the more athletic teams than almost any other college in America? Yes . . . they have a football team and yes . . . they have a very good cheerleading squad! The MIT undergraduate athletic center would be a star on any campus. It includes a world class swim center and an ice hockey rink.
And as far as grade grubbing is concerned; MIT doesn’t even give grades to 1st semester freshmen. All 1st semester grades are pass/fail and if you fail, it doesn’t ever appear on your official transcript!
Well, one thing you know for sure . . . MIT grads are all math and science nerds. Except that some of those MIT grads are people like famous statesman and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and actor James Woods the star of television’s hit show, “Shark”.
It’s true that MIT is one of the world’s truly great “tech” universities but there’s much more happening on the Charles River campus than just science and math and it’s not all work either. MIT is also famous for creating some of the most remarkable campus pranks in collegiate history. These stunts include remotely inflating a weather balloon with MIT markings at midfield during half time of a sold out Harvard vs. Yale football game. Or another time when MIT students managed to construct a police car on the top of the university’s iconic campus dome more than 5 stories above ground. When the real police were finally able to reach the prank site, they discovered the prank police car complete with hot coffee and donuts!
