Conversation #2
The weather in Atlanta, Georgia is brisk but not particularly cold this January morning. On the postcard perfect campus of Emory University just a few miles from downtown ‘Hotlanta’ and nearby Buckhead, two admissions counselors have begun to review an application . . .
Admissions Officer #1 : Did you see these two applications from Kennedy High School in New Jersey? Both kids have a 3.8 GPA. Let’s see, the first kid started with some B’s and a couple of C’s as a freshman but seems to have gotten stronger and stronger every term since then. Wow, almost nothing but A’s for the last two years. What’s the other file look like?
Admissions Officer #2 : Let’s see, they started strong as a freshman . . . all A’s all year long. Seems to have gradually faded since then. Mostly B’s and a couple of C’s this year.
Admissions Officer #1 : Hmmm, doesn’t seem to be going well but . . . they both have the same 3.8 GPA average! As far as I’m concerned that makes ‘em equal on grades.
Admissions Officer #2 : Absolutely, who cares if this kid has been slacking for the past year? If they have the same GPA then we’re taking both of them.
Admissions Officer #1 : You know it! Send each of ‘em a ‘thick’ envelope of congratulations!
