For Future Scientists It’s . . . Size, Size, Size!
There’s one aspect of Caltech which is unique among the world’s great universities . . . size. No, not the size of the campus or the size of Caltech’s world influence . . . just the size of its student body. At any given time, Caltech has approximately 900 undergraduate students. No, not 900 Freshmen . . . 900 undergraduates . . . total! Many students arrive at Caltech from high schools which had more students. This special feature of the school guarantees a unique undergraduate education.
Most great schools go out of their way to boast about the intimate nature of their undergraduate experience. They brag about low faculty to student ratios. They stress that undergraduates really do have a chance to interact with top faculty and participate in meaningful research projects. These features are listed in bold headlines throughout their web sites so they must believe it’s important.
There is exactly one great university that doesn’t need to brag, or devise favorable statistics or stretch the truth about these issues . . . Caltech. It’s that simple. No other university in America offers undergraduate students an experience like that being offered at Caltech. As a point of reference, the student body at MIT is 5 times larger than at Caltech and the student body at Georgia Tech is more than 10 times larger than at Caltech! Where do you think undergraduate science phenoms will have the most “hands on” opportunities and faculty interaction?
