Many “Firsts” Along Commonwealth Ave . . .
The staff at uraccepted love writing “that’s interesting” features about BU because there’s so much to include! We’ll limit ourselves but trust us, we could go on for quite a while about this school. We’ll start with what a BU student looks like. It’s impossible to tell because the campus features one of the most culturally diverse student bodies in the world. This is no accident and it’s not a new “politically correct” policy. From the day BU was founded back in 1839, it has been open to all qualified students. This has led to quite a few “firsts”. BU was the first American university to open all of it divisions to women. BU was the first American university to award a PHD to a woman . . . her name was Helen Magill. BU graduate Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller was the very first African American psychiatrist in the United States. The list goes on for quite a while!
There are a few less serious and little known facts about BU that are also quite interesting. For instance, BU is famous for its “urban” campus. Students walk to many of Boston’s exciting city features such as Fenway Park and Back Bay but as recently as 1943 . . . there were cows allowed to graze on campus!
BU’s hockey team is regularly a national powerhouse but there’s one fact you might not know. The legendary “Impossible Dream” gold medal Olympic hockey team of 1980 contained four players from the BU hockey team. Perhaps that gold medal belongs on Commonwealth Ave!
Finally, the Atlanta Braves baseball team were originally the Boston Braves. They played their home games, including the longest MLB game ever played, at “Braves Field” which is now a part of the BU campus.
