“Old School” . . . With New Style!
Anyone who has watched the irreverent television show “Family Guy” has heard Peter make snide remarks about Brown. The joke usually has something to do with students going to Brown because they weren’t admitted to Harvard. The writers of “Family Guy” must be very, very old because if this misconception was ever true . . . it was a long time ago. While most famous universities make important changes at a pace quite a bit slower than either glaciers or molasses, Brown is different. A generation ago, the administration at Brown took a very serious look at exactly how a college education should be structured. They threw out the book of “how it has always been done” and started with a fresh page. What evolved is one of the most innovative and exciting academic structures that can be found at any top university. Brown actually empowered its students. Most top universities boast that the primary focus of the school is its undergraduate student body and most top universities are lying when they say it. Brown is a welcome exception!
Somehow, Brown managed to blend the centuries old traditions of an Ivy League university with the excitement and change of a true 21st century university. Add a campus which is a stone’s throw from a revitalized Providence, an easy hour drive to Boston and an even easier drive to some of the nicest beaches on the New England coast and you have a guaranteed collegiate winner!
