An Exceptional School in Many Different Ways . . .
For a school that is 200 years younger than many East Coast “Ivy League”colleges, Berkeley is unusually rich in college traditions. In fact, at uraccepted, we think Berkeley might just have more past or current traditions per student than any similar college! Some of the most interesting include the tradition of touching the “4.0 ball”, a century old stone sphere on campus before taking an important exam, maintaining a giant “C” high in the hills above campus and the Axe Rally before the Stanford football game.
One of Berkeley’s most famous alumni is rather unique . . . he doesn’t actually exist! Jack Bauer, the character played by Kiefer Sutherland on the popular television series “24” allegedly earned a Masters Degree in “Criminology and Law” from Berkeley. Of course just as Jack Bauer doesn’t actually exist, Berkeley doesn’t actually offer a degree in “Criminology and Law”.
For an elite university, Berkeley holds an unusual distinction. Its reasonable tuition means that many outstanding students with modest family incomes can afford to attend. In fact, the number of students with Pell Grants at Berkeley, meaning that their family income is $45,000 or less, is greater than the total number of students with Pell Grants at all of the Ivy League schools combined! That’s certainly an indication that Berkeley recognizes its responsibility to educate any outstanding student without regard to his or her family income.
